3 Wedding Photography Composition Mistakes to Avoid

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-9-00-17-amAs a wedding photographer, you have to make sure to get the proper family shots, couple shots, bridal party shots – the list goes on and on. Then there are candid shots to capture. The constant energy and activity at weddings can be overwhelming. When you’re caught up in the excitement of the wedding, there are common mistakes made in composition. Here’s how to avoid them:

Look for lines

Use lines to direct the eye of the viewer into the scene. Lines like the center aisle of the church can move the viewer’s eye toward the groom standing at the front of the church. You can even use a trail of flower petals to direct the viewer’s eye toward the back of the bride’s dress as she walks down the isle. Using lines can enhance the composition of a photo.

Mix posed photos with candid shots

Typically, you’ll have a set list of shots to make sure you capture. Get them all, but be sure to get plenty of shots that aren’t on the list, too. It’s easy to get caught up in posing everyone, so make sure to mix in candid shots, too. These moments happen in between the posed shots when everyone is getting organized and into place. Have your camera ready.

Vary the framing

Switch up your framing to give your clients a mix of shots with different visual appeal. Aside from the traditional shots you’ll be taking of the best man giving his speech and the couple during their first dance, include non-traditional shots, too. Capture the young ring bearer dancing at the reception at floor level to show his fancy footwork. Take pictures of the couple holding hands as they talk to different wedding guests. These shots allow you to be artistic and will be extremely meaningful to your clients.
